Grist is seeking work from both emerging and established writers, whose work is of high literary quality and value. We value poetry, fiction, and creative non-fiction that is aware of the history that has come before it. While we welcome all styles, we seek experimentation that shows an awareness of what is being subverted and why.

We read submissions between July 15 and November 1. We no longer accept snail mail submissions. Simultaneous submissions are acceptable as long as we are notified immediately if the piece is accepted elsewhere. Please upload only one file: Combine poetry submissions under a single file name. Please do not mix genres in the same submission. We do not consider previously published work.

The average response time is 2-4 months. If you have not received a response after 4 months (excluding the summer months), send a query to your genre's editor.

Submissions will be considered for publication in both the print and online versions of the journal, but publication on the website does not ensure print publication. Pay is two contributor’s copies plus reduced cost on additional copies.

Grist is published each spring by the Creative Writing Program at the University of Tennessee. In addition to many emerging writers, previous volumes have included such writers as: Dan Albergotti, Dorothy Allison, Rane Arroyo, Ellen Bass, Richard Bausch, Peter Ho Davies, Tom Franklin, Elizabeth Gilbert, Lyn Hejinian, Richard Jackson, Fady Joudah, Dorianne Laux, Julia B. Levine, Lisa Lewis, Joseph Millar, Danielle Pafunda, Ron Rash, Hilda Raz, Bobby C. Rogers, and William Wenthe.

To submit, choose which type of manuscript you are submitting from the genre choices below and follow the directions from there.
